The Fresh Mountain Air

We have taken a short trip an hour up the mountain to Hume Lake Christian Conference Center for our Valentine's Day get away.  We had a fabulous time with our friend Floyd last night.  We were curled up by the fire chatting late into the night.  Unfortunately, Floyd had to start work at 6 AM this morning so it was a relatively early evening, we still managed to keep him up well past his bed time (sorry Floyd!)

The air is so crisp and clean up here, scented with pines, and there's the beautiful sparkle of the sun off the patches of old snow.  It has relaxed us wonderfully… just wish it were for longer Smile , but alas, deadlines await!  I don't have my digital camera with me, but when I get home I'll try to dig up some old pictures of this place and share them with you, it's amazingly beautiful.

We hope you had a delightful Valentine's Day and took time to tell all of those you love how special they are to you.

Printing on Fabric

Those of you that have been reading my blog for a while, know a little of the insanity that was the preparations for the CHA show and my display for the Designer's Showcase.  I wanted to take a little time to share a little gem of a discovery I made during that process.  It's a printable fabric called "Pabric."

Many of the projects that I made were created with this material.  It printed fabulously and was wonderful to work with.  Pabric is not machine washable, but can be either spot cleaned with a damp cloth or dry cleaned so making a clothing item probably wouldn't be practical, but for decor, the sky is the limit!  You can find Pabric at www.pabric.com

Project made with Pabric

The photo album and journal were purchased items that I covered with Pabric Creative which is a heavier weight fabric that has a slight vinyl feel to it and is perfect for these applications.  I used ribbon to cover the joints and printed a matching cardstock page to use inside the covers and they looked as though I purchased them!

The Wall hanging will be a kit in the near future, but I still need to adapt the project to standard 8.5 x 11" sheets (I used a 16" roll pabric trimmed to 13" to fit through my Epson wide format printer.

The pillow below also will be a kit, though I will probably make it into a square so it's easier to find a pillow form.  When sewing for home decor uses, the pabric is a little stiff and really is meant for decorative use only (I don't think I would use it to really cuddle up with!)  Hand stitching the seams closed took a little bit of effort, but was worthwhile when it was done.

Pabric pillow

One of my goals in making these projects was to hopefully attract a fabric company to license with… and it worked!  I will have a line of quilting fabrics by later this year.  I'll keep you posted!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY TO ALL!

Live a Legacy, Leave a Legacy

"I’ve already stated that I scrap for me.  Well, that’s partially true.  I scrap for me out of my own selfish desires not to leave my descendants hanging.  I want to solve all the mysteries, answer all the questions, anticipate the needs that they will have once I have moved on to the next level of my journey.  It is that passion, that drive, that inherent need that compels me to sit at my computer day after day and immortalize my world (or at least my view of it) so that my children and grandchildren can know me."

This quote came from a scrap page by Cherrie Webb.  I saw it yesterday on a yahoo group called, Computer Scrapping and asked her permission to quote it.

It made me think…   What passions, what lessons learned, what life experiences are worthy of passing on as a legacy to my grandchildren, yet to be born?  If I want to leave a legacy, I have to LIVE a legacy.  How do I do that?  How then can I pass that legacy on to my generations?  This will take a lot more than a single post to process…

My dear friend, Kathy Cornford, who passed away in June after a 10 year battle with breast cancer lived a legacy.  Her character was so beautiful that she imprinted it upon the hearts of her children and grandchildren in a thousand different ways.  She loved deeply, selflessly, she fought her cancer hard, but with a great realism that prepared each family member to face what none hoped would ever come, but did.

But Kathy did something else… she wrote.  She kept a daily bible study and prayer journal that she left behind her.  Her husband is treasuring reading it and is actually coming to know more about his wife of 40 years, than he did before.  Her love was evidenced more powerfully in the hidden places of her private life than even those who knew her best could have imagined.  She has left a piece of the depths of her soul to be treasured by generations yet to be born.

Live a legacy.. Leave a legacy… write your inmost thoughts about everyday affairs (don't worry if you're not a "great" writer) your family wants to know you — the real you!  For it's you that they treasure…

Make it Valentine’s Week! (Freebie)

(UPDATE: freebies are for a limited time only.  This link no longer functions.  Check back later for other special gifts). Rather than save all your special goodies for one day, why not spread them out over the entire week, both before and after Valentine’s Day?   I wanted to share an idea I had.  It started a couple of years ago…Free download

I wanted to do something really special for my husband (who is a dream boat!!!)  He buys me 2 or 3 cards at a time and hides them in places where I will randomly find them for no occasion at all… I’m hopelessly behind, how can you compete with that?  So, I got on my little computer and designed an "I love you because…." layout.  Then I took the time to think about every single thing I loved about him and hid these little notes all over the house, his office, his truck, in his toolbox, and anywhere he could stumble onto them.  I even hid a few "spicey" ones where he was the only one who could come across them Smile  (She blushes profusely Embarassed!)

Just yesterday I had to go into his bible case to find something and guess what I found hidden there?!  He’s still carrying them all these years later.

You can make a different color design for every member of your family and write all the special things that you can think of about each one… a compliment based on the truth of one’s character can encourage someone FOR A LIFETIME!  Take the time to share them today!

Click on the image, then right click on the image that comes up and choose where you want to save it to.  Then choose go back to come back here!  Freebies come under Daisie Company’s angel policy.  See link to Daisie if you need to know what those terms are.  Enjoy!

Refrigerator Art

Someone at a company I design product for, once asked me what motivated me to work such long hours to create my art.  I answered him, "I create refrigerator art for my Heavenly Father!"  He looked at me a little strangely, laughed and said, "You're going to have to explain that one to me."

"Well," I said, "If I worked for the praise and adulation of the manufacturers I design for or the store owners that buy the product or even the retail customers that are going to buy it for their homes or to give as gifts, I'm going to be totally disappointed.  Not because they don't appreciate it, but because I rarely ever hear from them."

"If I work to reach some pinnacle of glory and honor that's hard to define and even harder to reach, I'm going to become one sick puppy!  When I reach the mountain top I'm aiming for, I'll just look beyond and see a dozen peaks that are higher yet.  I've been blessed to design for many of the companies that have been on my wish list for years and have enjoyed each opportunity, yet it's hard to remember today what I did last month, last year or the last decade.  It's fun for the moment but it doesn't satisfy for a lifetime and beyond."

"So," I told him, "When I sit down in my art studio and begin to paint, I create art that my 'Daddy' will hang proudly on His refrigerator and point out to anyone who drops by saying, 'That's my kid, isn't she great?  Look what she made for me today!'  I find the greatest satisfaction when I create for an audience of one. "

"At the end of the day I hear Him whispering to my heart, 'Did you do your best?  If you did and you did it for me and not for the praise of man, then it's good enough to hang in my throne room!  Come curl up in my lap and tell me about your day."

That word picture can apply to your life as well.  Do you work for the praise of your spouse or your boss?  For a raise or a promotion?  Do you work hard and no one seems to notice or tell you, "Thank you."  Do you work hard to make your family a success and all you get are the ungrateful whines of your children?  If you're discouraged, think of my little word picture and do your work as a gift to God that you will hand Him at the end of the day and see how it changes your motivation and satisfaction.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.  Col 3:23-24 NIV"

There’s a Little Less of Me…

Than there was a year ago.  Over the past year I've lost 60 lbs. and have kept it off even when not dieting (Thank you, I heard the whoo hoo!)  I needed to lose weight because of a family history of heart disease, diabetes and stroke.  I love my husband too much to leave him early or make him have to take care of an invalid wife.  It was a long journey, but one which wasn't at all hard, much to my surprise!

I'm going to be contributing to a weight-loss journal that Sandy Osborne is writing and I promised her I would write my thoughts down for her to incorporate, so it's easier to write to you guys than to a blank piece of paper.

Here's the principles I learned in my weight loss journey:

  1. There are a lot of good weight loss programs out there, and they all share at their core these basic principles: eat healthy, measured portions, exercise and take the time to figure out why you're eating too much, then change the patterns.
  2. There is no magic pill, food or diet that will make weight loss require no effort.  You have to change your existing habits.  I ate too much of the wrong foods and didn't exercise… there really wasn't a mystery even though I would have preferred that there were!
  3. The things I didn't want to do were the very things that set me free from the chains of overeating.  I had to keep a food journal, which meant measuring and writing down every piece of food that entered my mouth.  I had to read up on the calorie counts of every food.  Yes, it was hard at the beginning, but within a week I knew that 1/2 cup of brown rice was 108 calories and my usual portion before had been 432 calories.  I learned a small slice of cheesecake might be 450 calories and a large bowl of melons 100 calories.  Now, even if I can't write things down I always know where I am in my daily intake almost without having to think about it.
  4. I discovered that wonderful tasting food didn't mean high calories.  Most spices are 0 calories!  Also, whole foods mean huge portions for small calories so I never felt denied.  Whole grains don't make your insulin levels spike, they take a long time to digest and keep you at an even keel (for normal, non-diabetics I don't know how it affects diabetes).
  5. I discovered whole foods satisfy my hunger and stop the cravings.  100% whole wheat, brown rice, 7 grain Kashi Pilaf, fresh fruits and vegetables give my body real body-building, energy-producing calories and when my body gets real food it quits screaming "feed me."  The cravings stopped within 3 days of cutting out white flours and refined sugars.  The very cravings that I had been powerless to overcome disappeared totally.
  6. I discovered that eating even a little bit of white sugar, white flour and other refined foods set me up to fail.  It initiated cravings in my body that made my "dieting" very hard and uncomfortable.  When I avoided them, I literally had a hard time eating all of my 1200 calories per day allotment.
  7. I had to face the ways I used food to meet my emotional needs and realize that it never actually did.  Food wasn't my friend, my comforter, or my way to beat boredom.
  8. I learned that it was detrimental to my body to ever drop below 1,000 calories a day.  My body would start to eat it's own muscle rather than the fat I wanted to get rid of.
  9. I learned to love the way I eat so much I don't want the foods I used to think I couldn't live without.  Best of all, if I love what I'm eating it's easy to eat that way for the rest of my life.

There's more in the program I was on, which is the Prism Weight Loss Program, www.pwlp.com.  It is a Christianity based, common sense, weight loss and support program but you don't have to be a Christian to benefit from it.  Every person inmy life that has worked the program for 6 weeks or has found incredible success at losing weight and keeping it off.

A daughter is doing Jenny Craig's program and doing wonderfully.  A friend is doing Weight Watcher's and has lost 50 pounds.  The secret is start a program, go to the meetings and do the work and it will work for you too.

Making Valentine’s Day Special

It takes thoughtful planning to make the day special for the ones you love.  Whether you buy or make a card, plan a special dinner or whisk someone away for a special evening.  It's not hard to think of fun things to do when you have someone who is dear to you to share the day with… but what about those around us who don't?

We have very special plans for our Valentine's Day this year.  I'm "whisking" Steve away to take him up the mountain to Hume Lake Christian Conference Center for a quick 2 day, 1 night get away.  Sounds romantic (and it will be), but we have a greater purpose in mind.  We're sharing our Valentine's Day with a dear friend who lost his wife of 40 years (and the love of his life) to Breast Cancer last June.  We don't want him to be alone this Valentine's Day, so we will spend the evening with him sharing memories of Kath and how special a woman she was.

We love Floyd very much and Kathy was one of the most special people I've ever had the privilege to know in my lifetime… all of us grieve her loss almost daily.  We're looking forward to hugging Floyd, praying with him and encouraging him to continue on in this adventure of life.  We can feel Kathy looking down and cheering us on.

Who is there in your life that will be alone and perhaps feeling unloved this Valentine's Day?  Is there a 20 something that has never had a relationship and fears she never will?  Is there a woman who was widowed some years ago?  Is there someone who is in the throes of a painful divorce?  Look around and ask the Lord to show you one person who really needs to know that they are loved and that they are special to someone.  Perhaps in doing so it will be one of your best Valentine's Days ever.

"Keep on loving each other as brothers (and sisters Laughing).  Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels withoug knowing it.  Hebrews 13:1-2

Back in the Groove…

smajrob_mockup_notecard_env_sunflower1.pngajrob_icon_sm_twig_trellis_w_thatch_birdhouse.pngIt has taken almost an entire week to recover from the CHA show.

Most of it was spent sleeping in late when I could and just wishing I had some energy (that's about as close to resting as I am capable of getting!)  In that week I have managed to design my blog's aesthetics and if my wonderful superhero, blogmaster Nathan can implement them for me, we'll be "prettified."

I've also managed to get two new kits ready for D.A.I.S.I.E. Company release on Friday.  One is my "Feathered Friends" which features birds in the garden and the second is the beginning of what will be a pretty large release, "English Cottage Garden I."  The image above with the English Cottage Birdhouse and trellis is from "Feathered Friends," the basket below is from "English Cottage Garden I."  As I love all things garden and I'm longing for Spring with its attendant flowers, the next best thing is to look at pretty spring images.!

ajrob_icon_sm_flower_basket_wred_yellow_lavendar.pngThe Thank You note will be available as a Itty Bitty Kit some time next week for those that didn't win it by entering my "Creating With Audrey Jeanne Contest."  Thanks to everyone that did.  It was such fun seeing your creativity on display!!!  Now.. I have no more excuses must go paint some fried chicken, mashed potatoes, tomato slices and desserts… especially CHOCOLATE desserts!!!!  This is for my 4 new cookbooks that will be debuting soon.  I'll let you know who, what, where and when soon.

What a Week!!!

How do you summarize such an amazing whirlwind of a week as CHA?  The process of getting out the door exhausted us before we ever got there!  We arrived Friday afternoon and picked up my friend Karla Dornacher (www.karladornacher.com) at the Ontario airport and had so much fun catching up, that we missed our turn onto the 57 freeway and had to take the long way around to get back.  A trip that should have been 30-45 minutes took an hour and a half!  Friday night we connected up with Stacey Thomas and Andrea Wainscott of The Daisie Company for dinner.  None of us recognized each other even though we had seen pictures.  We realized how far short a single picture goes in capturing the essence of an individual… their smile, their laugh, and especally their sense of humor.  We deeply enjoyed getting to know one another and shared our vision for where we're headed with The Daisie Company. Saturday we took a single class on Photoshop for designers.  It was totally an overwhelming experience even though the instructor tried very hard to make it relevant from beginner to the intermediate level.  In retrospect it was a feat that I'm not sure could be accomplished by anyone.  Perhaps next year CHA will have her do two classes instead.  We took Lina (the instructor) out to dinner afterwards and talked late into the night.  We seemed to do that a lot of over the week, much to our dismay later on when the sleep deprivation began to accumulate.  Lina will probably be doing online private tutoring on Photoshop for artists once I get her hooked up with my Techie guru Bill Findley.  She is an outstanding teacher with a vast knowledge of the program and its application to fine art.  We'll give it some test runs and when she's open for business I'll let you know in case you'd like to have some individualized instruction. We began to see the trade show floor on Sunday and by Wednesday we still hadn't seen everything!  If you know the Anaheim Convention Center, it filled every hall and a good part of the lower basement as well.  There were art materials mfgs., scrapbook companies, craft supply companies and crafting equipment mfgs.  There were software companies and craft organizing and storage mfgs.  I can't even list all the categories let alone all the products that were there.  Later I'll write posts with in depth reviews of some of the products we saw and trend observations of note.  For anyone thinking of attending next year or this summer in Chicago, I highly recommend it.  It was a wonderful time of creativity and discovery. Finally, we participated in the Designer's Forum which was a time where I was finally able to meet some online friends and connect name, face and craft together.  I've only known names from the Society of Creative Designer's discussion group emails (which then became the Designer's Transitional Group of CHA).  It was fun to see their work exhibited for the CHA members to enjoy.  There were some absolutely amazing displays of talent there.  Alright, it's time to turn in for the evening… thanks for stopping by!
