Very Disappointed, but Hopeful for the Future

I’ve been working on my Carbonite backup and discovered this morning that they can only back up internal hard drives on a PC at this point.  So if all or most of your files are located on your actual computer, it’s a great service, but if you are like me and are running 3 external hard drives it won’t work in their current configuration.

I will say this, their customer service has been prompt, thorough and very good, they just didnt’ have the answers I wanted to hear!  The hopeful news is that they are planning a new release in early 2008 and it just might be able to do what I need it to do at that point.  DRATS and DOUBLE DRATS :-)!  I will keep checking back and let you know if and when the improvements are coming.

THE CHRISTMAS STORY:  Luke 1:66-2:1 Zechariah’s Prophecy

67 Then his father, Zechariah, was filled with the Holy Spirit and gave this prophecy:
68 "Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited his people and redeemed them. 69 He has sent us a mighty Savior from the royal line of his servant David, 70 just as he promised through his holy prophets long ago. 71 Now we will be saved from our enemies and from all who hate us. 72 He has been merciful to our ancestors by remembering his sacred covenant with them, 73 the covenant he gave to our ancestor Abraham. 74 We have been rescued from our enemies,so we can serve God without fear, 75 in holiness and righteousness forever.
76 "And you, my little son, will be called the prophet of the Most High, because you will prepare the way for the Lord. 77 You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins. 78 Because of God’s tender mercy, the light from heaven is about to break upon us, 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace."
80 John grew up and became strong in spirit. Then he lived out in the wilderness until he began his public ministry to Israel. NLT

  1. It sounds like you need a RAID and your own auto-backup program! Given Carbonite’s costs, it’s definitely less expensive IF they can support your external drives. I just hit their web page and left them with a bunch of questions, including external drive support. Hopefully they’ll realize it’s important and just do it.

  2. I sure do need the back up for internal and external hard drive. Please let us know about the new release in January. Hope we hear the news we want to hear.

  3. I did testing for them over the summer and was not impressed with their services at all. The biggest downfall for me was there was no remote ability if you run more than one PC and that they did not support external devices. Add to that if your service goes down during a backup it’s a moot point to use.

There are other online services that are similar but cost more and I’m not a fan of online backups to begin with. Personally I would suggest you run a stand alone pc program to do incremental backups or backup important data at night while your computer is not being used.

Depending on how many slots you have in your pc you would be much wiser to add an additional hard drive for the purpose of backing up only. The other option is do the math on purchasing another computer and network them for backup on your own compared to what you pay for the online services. (Great information, thanks for sharing your experience. I was hoping that they would solve one really important issue for me, off-site backup. I live in wildfire country and need to be prepared for an unexpected emergency. One reason I was looking for online was to augment my other methods of backing up. AJ)

  4. Thanks, AJ, for sharing your thoughts regarding Carbonite. Hopefully, in the spring, there will be an update to take care of your external hard drive.

And thank you for the reading today. We should all serve God without fear, in holiness and righteousness forever. It is His gift to us…one of many.

  5. Interestingly enough, I’ve received no response from the Carbonite people yet.

We just bought another external drive for DH’s Mac. The latest Mac OS has the “Time Machine” feature: you designate a hard drive for backups, and it automagically backs up your data — and maintains many versions of it, so you can roll back to a particular date and time if you wish.

There should be similar programs you can purchase for the PC….

  6. Thanks for all the info AJ. I can see that it would be very important for you to have an off site backup.

  7. Love the colors you chose to make these with.
You must not get much rest as it seems you are always coming up with great ideas.
