Memory Mixer Software Review by Audrey Jeanne Roberts

One of the most progressive and interesting people I met and spent a good deal of time with at the Memory Trends show last month, was Kerry Hill, owner of the "Lasting Impressions " scrapbooking company.  We met at a social event that kicked off the show and then interacted quite a bit during the show itself.  She graciously allowed me hang around her booth and look over her shoulder as she presented the Memory Mixer Software demonstration to Scrapbook store owners.  She also provided a demo copy of the program for me to give a thorough test drive of so that I could give you my honest and educated opinion on its functionality.

After an extensive review, I believe that Lasting Impressions "Memory Mixers" software is especially suited for many of my digital crafting readers that would like to start scrapbooking.  So many of you buy digital art, but have been somewhat intimidated by how to use it to scrapbook your family memories effectively.  This product might be the answer to making that step a reality.  If you’re already experienced with software such as Photoshop, Microsoft’s Digital Image Pro or PSP, you won’t likely need this software, but if you’re a beginner this might be a great place to start.  Your Christmas list might even be handled amazingly easily and inexpensively if you make the initial investment to purchase this program.

I asked my 21 year old daughter, Jacqui to download "Memory Mixers" and without any instruction or prior graphics experience, see if she could figure it out on her own.  In Jacqui’s exact words this program is , "The easiest thing in the world to use!!!!"   I felt if she could easily find her way around the program, so could any of you.  Her experience confirmed that it has an extremely intuitive interface, yet has very powerful capabilities.  She didn’t just like it SHE LOVED IT!

Within one hour she had created an entire album that consisted of 6 pages — not bad for just getting started in scrapbooking her life!  Her favorite features were that it leads you easily through step-by-step creation of not only a page, but a style that you can apply to your entire album if you wish so that it has a cohesive, sophisticated feel.  For example, she created a standard drop shadow that will be added to every picture she imports into her album no matter what page it is on.  She also loved that you can likewise create "mats" of specific colors and sizes that will be applied to each picture.  Moving items around on the page was as simple as dragging them and adjusting their size.  The organization of the graphics that come with the program is very easy to figure out and might be a great example for many of you in setting up your own digital art files (a constant source of frustration to many of you 🙂 )

For those of you "graphics collectors" who have oodles of existing digital art collections, you’ll love the fact that you can access and use them through "Memory Mixers," so you are not limited to their provided content.  "Memory Mixers" also sells additional content on their web site and you can create a calendar or a book in this program and then have them create a beautiful quality, hard bound copy.   I saw many examples of their finished books and they are of exquisite quality and yet very fairly priced as well.

The software provides pre-existing scrapbook layout templates that you can use to create great layouts with no design skills required.  Also, if resizing your photos, cropping, and changing their shapes has been intimidating to you, it is easily accomplished with Memory Mixers.  For instance if you have a standard sized photo that is horizontal, it takes two seconds to crop it to an oval, a circle, square or zoom in on only a face.  The changes are non-destructive and can be modified just as quickly should you change your mind.

This software retails for $79.95, and there is quite a bit of graphic content contained in it, so you are paying for the art and the software to start.  They also offer add on graphics for $35.  You can purchase their software online at http://www.memorymixer.com/ or at many major software outlets such as Office Depot.

While this isn’t the least expensive software available to create digital creations off of, it is the easiest to use specifically for scrapbooking that I have seen.  I believe it likely that you won’t purchase it and then have it sit unused on your computer because the learning curve is too steep! I love the quality of everything this company produces and can highly, highly recommend any product that they offer.

The Drawing Winner for a Free Digital Clip Art Kit is….

Carol aka CACrafty!  You have won my "We Give Thanks" printable Fall/Thanksgiving decor kit.  I will be sending it your way later today.  And thank you all for participating in my count down (or up actually!)  It was a lot of fun to celebrate with friends.  GranAnn, I’m still waiting to hear your choice of kit, just let me know and it also will be heading your way.

As to my word of wisdom today… on my 49th birthday… just a short one.  My late husband passed away when I was 36 and he was 44.   I realized then, that birthdays were a treasure and not a curse.  I determined that I would choose never to regret or resent a birthday or the number or years that it represented as each one is a very special gift.  I realized that aging was unavoidable but getting old was a choice.  I also realized that the youngest people I knew who were older had a few special things in common, 1. they all kept young people in their lives and continued to make and nurture relationships with many people who were younger than themselves.  2.  They all loved God and His people  3.  They were all invested in seeing people’s lives change around them.  4.  They dealt with change gracefully, because as you age change happens.  You lose friends and loved ones, you lose body function (and a little off of the brain’s function 🙂 ! )  So much of life is about constant change.

So I’ve never had a "hard" birthday, I don’t sweat the number or worry about how many years I have passed through or how many years I’ll have yet ahead of me, I just enjoy each day to its fullest.  I delight in the family God has given me, as well as the husband who is the love of my life and truly my dearest and best friend.  I marvel at the career that I’ve been blessed to have, one that I wake up each morning excited to see what I’ll get to create that day and have a hard time stopping at the end of the day.  And I LOVE the incredibly wonderful heavenly Father that made all of them possible!  Thank you all for your sweet birthday messages, it’s been so fun to wake up to them and so hilarious to see the countdown to my birthday around the world thread on the message board at DAISIE yesterday.  THANKS!!!!

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY: Phil 4:4-7 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!  Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.  Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  NIV

New Gingerbread House Digital Craft Kits Coming Next Week by Audrey Jeanne Roberts

(UPDATE: Now available in the Daisie store for $5.98 for the decorated house and $4.98 for the undecorated house.  Just click on the pictures to go there).  Gingerbread House Digital Craft Kit I have been working on these Gingerbread Cottages for almost two months and finally have them completed.  I have created one that is in essence a "blank" for you to decorate as you wish either by using my own Gingerbread Cottage Christmas kits that will also be coming next week or utilizing graphics you may already own.

The Cottage kits are a nice large size, but are printed entirely off of letter sized cardstock so every one can create it no matter what printer you own.

Gingerbread House Digital Craft Kit, PlainThese cottages can be used as gift boxes and look quite lovely when tied with a glittery wired ribbon bow to keep closed.  They can also be used to create your own Gingerbread Village display for the holidays.

I am working on add on kits that will have gingerbread people, trees, candy, signs, mailboxes, light posts, snowmen and other cute items to poplulate your village with.  I am having way too much fun on this (I thought this was supposed to be my work 🙂 )!

For the 100,000th visitor contest, we crossed 99,500 visitors early this afternoon and will probably go over the mark some time tomorrow.  If you want to be entered in the drawing for the random winner, be sure to post a comment today, tomorrow and every day until we cross as I will select from the comments on the actual cross over day!

THE PROVERB OF THE DAY:  Prov 9:13-18  The woman Folly is loud; she is undisciplined and without knowledge.  She sits at the door of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city, calling out to those who pass by, who go straight on their way.  "Let all who are simple come in here!" she says to those who lack judgment.  "Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!"  But little do they know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of the grave.  NIV

UPDATE/EXPLANATION:  This proverb contrasts lady wisdom (the verses prior to the ones used today) and the woman folly.  The writer uses an artistic device to personify character traits and make them come alive.  I can only quote a small portion each day and I rotate through them picking a couple verses out of the proverb that matches the date as there are 31 proverbs, so sometimes you may need to pick up your bible and read it in it’s context to get its message clearly.

The Treasure Found in “Old” (Oops I mean “Lifelong”) Friends :-)

I just finished a conversation with a very dear, very long time friend named Joan Fitzgerald.  We have drifted a little apart in the last few years due to life circumstances and time stresses, but are still and always joined at the heart.  Conversing with her this morning made me think of a few things that I want to share with each of you.

There’s something really deeply vital in sharing the deepest needs, concerns of your heart and joys with a dear friend.  God didn’t mean for us to live our lives and struggles alone.  He designed us to carry one another’s burdens and to laugh together.  We’re stronger when we’re bound together in love, than any of us can be on our own.

There’s also another wonderful side benefit of having shared many years with a longtime friend… when you forget something she remembers!  Joan shared some stories with my husband and daughters today that I hat TOTALLY forgotten about.  Two memories are much better than one 🙂 especially as we age!  Joan and I have had some amazing adventures over the years.  She’s known me since BEFORE I became an artist.  She’s seen my really, really, really BBBBAAADDDDD first attempts at creating stained glass windows and watched me grow experience by experience.

She was a recipient of one of my very first attempts at calligraphy in 1983 and still has it today.  The Lord taught me to practice my calligraphy by picking a scripture and hand lettering it and then carrying it with me during my day and finding someone to give it away to.  Many of those scriptures ended up being virtually prophetic in how they touched people’s lives and of course I was the most blessed of all in giving them away.  If you are an artist or a crafter, consider doing something similar with your talents.  You can never lose when you give of your heart — especially if you give away a gift that God gave you in a way that honors Him.  He loves to bless us back.  The entire career I have today began with giving those little scriptures away, one-by-one.

If you have a lifelong friend, call her (or him) today and remind them just how much you love them and tell them how glad you are that they share your life.  If you don’t have a deep friend to turn to, I’m praying that God will send one your way and begin to build those powerful and lasting bonds of friendship that give so much more meaning to our days.

One of the ways I’ve developed two of the deepest friendships in my life was by becoming "prayer partners" with them first.  That’s how Joan and I became friends and my other dear friend Sally.  Because we had a purpose for our friendship and we were sharing deep needs and concerns, we quickly got past the surface and built our relationship on who we really were.  There’s something deeply connecting about praying together regularly with someone  Sally and I had our children together and would pray on my living room floor with our babies crawling all over us and with one eye closed and the other watching out for who was heading for the electrical outlet.  We prayed for our children, their lives and struggles, our husbands, for our own struggles of identity "Who am I and why am I here on this earth?"  God met us in that living room and changed our lives and the lives of others through our friendship.

Both of these dear women (and many others) walked me through the darkest days of my life when my first husband was diagnosed and ultimately passed away from Melanoma, skin cancer.  They held my hand, dried my tears and pointed me in the direction where my only hope was to be found — in God alone.  Because both Sally and Joan are older than I, they have also generously shared their wisdom and counsel and the occasional swift kick in the rear that I as a youngster often required!

A word of wisdom here.  While the internet is wonderful for developing acquaintances that you might never have made in real life, it cannot and should not replace face-to-face encounters and human hugs.  If you are lacking in the later, it takes some effort and at times requires getting out of your comfort zone to go meet people.  I know it’s scary.  It causes us to run the risk of rejection if our overtures of friendship are not responded to, but don’t let a few moments of fear and discomfort rob you of a potential of a lifetime of joy!

Prov 27:9  Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of one’s friend springs from his earnest counsel.  NIV

100,000th Visit Countdown, 99,000 is Coming Today!

Well, sometime this morning we’ll cross 99,000 so we’re almost there!  There are these four people that are the most likely to get it right:

Jane
Granann
amgranny4825(Terry)
Patsy
Aunt Anne

Their guesses range from the 9th to the 12th.  It is possible for me to have 1200 visitors in a day and have it happen today, but not likely!  Remember that those who post a comment on the day we cross over are eligible for a prize also.  I’ll be drawing randomly from the day’s comments.

I’m so utterly amazed that so many people have stopped by over the past 9 months.  It’s a joy to contemplate what I want to write and share from my heart.  Thank you so much for making me a little part of your day.

I’m working on my kits for next week and will have some previews up, probably tomorrow.  One is "Gingerbread Christmas" I will have a papers kit, a Gingerbread Cottage Makings kit, and probably will have my Gingerbread Cottage Centerpiece/Box as well.  So if you like to make your own packaging for Christmas goodies to give away or other similar projects you’ll have a great time with this kit!

THE PROVERB OF THE DAY: Prov 8:8-11 All the words of my mouth are just; none of them is crooked or perverse.  To the discerning all of them are right; they are faultless to those who have knowledge.  Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold,  for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her. NIV

An Awesome New Movie Coming Out, “Bella”

My husband sent me an email message describing a brand new movie that won the People’s Choice award at the Toronto film festival, called "Bella."  It is slated to come out in American theatres October 26th.  It is a beautiful story that is family friendly and very emotionally uplifting.

We don’t see a lot of movies, partially because we live so far away from the city that when we go into town our list is pretty long of what must get accomplished so we don’t have the time to spend the time to sit in a theatre!   However, when a really exceptional film comes out, we make it a priority to see it the first or second week in the theatre so that hopefully the film gets a wider showing.  We hope that if you like the film you’ll pass the information along and do likewise.

You can see "Bella’s" trailer at www.bellathemovie.com/site/#/film/videos/ and read more about the story behind the story at www.bellathemovie.com.  The men behind the film company have all had their lives touched by the love of God and have a desire to be a light shining in the darkness.  Eduardo Verstegui, the star of the movie, is someone you will most likely recognize.  He’s a huge star in Mexico who was voted one of "People en Espanol’s"  50 most beautiful people.  His coach that taught him English, was part of helping him find purpose in his life.  Through her impace, he has had a life-changing encounter with Christ, that has left him unwilling to play the type of roles he built his career upon.  He’s chosen to wait until he’s married before touching or kissing another woman.  Pretty radical and totally awesome stories.  These men are determined to set an example for their people and their culture to see of how a family can and should function.

Check out the trailers and pass the information along!

ON THE CONTEST:  THE BLOG COUNTER HIT 98.000 THIS MORNING!

THE PROVERB OF THE DAY:  Prov 6:16-19 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:  haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,  a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,  a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. NIV

The 100,000th Visitor Contest Entries are Closed, the Countdown Continues!

Midnight last night was the deadline to get your guess in  and quite a few of you have.  Now that the guessing is complete I can tell you that as of this morning, the count stands at 97,472.  I have been averaging somewhat over 500 visits per day so in all likelihood we’ll go over 100,000 somewhere around October 9-11.

Remember that the day that we cross over, not only will some lucky guesser win any kit that they would like from my Daisie Company Catalog, but a winner will be pulled from the comments on that day, so you might want to chat it up a bit to increase your chances.

I was busy working on an urgent licensing project so I wasn’t able to do any new kits for next week at Daisie 🙁 but hopefully I’ll get some time over the weekend to put together some new goodies.  If there are any specific items that you guys would like to see me do for the holidays please let me know.

One thing that I’m going to be spending quite a bit of time on is working with Pabric printable fabric to create some holiday kits.  I’m thinking about several different way I can utilize the exact same skills and art we use to create cards or scrapbook a page to create a unique, personalized home decor.  One of the first things I’m going to be working on will be a Christmas wallhanging kit.  Pabric’s fabrics print up beautifully, with a vibrant true-to-color appearance.  So if you like to sew, or create for your home stay tuned!  By the way, Pabric’s website is www.pabric.com if you aren’t familiar with all their products.

THE PROVERB OF THE DAY:  Prov 5:21-23 For a man’s ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all his paths.  The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him;
the cords of his sin hold him fast.  He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly. NIV

It’s a Great Time to Start Changing Your Eating Habits

Are you thinking about the holidays already?  Does that thinking also include how you’re going to avoid putting on the 5-10 pounds that sneaks up on you each year during this season?  If so, now might be the best possible time to start a new eating plan.

When I lost my weight two years ago, we started the first of November.  By Thanksgiving our results had already been so excellent and we were feeling so much better than we had before starting our eating program, that we sailed through the holidays without even a temptation to eat the goodies and candies that came our way.  We just regifted them and passed them along.  If you’re even thinking about it, let me encourage you to make the step and go forward.  Before the holidays is the perfect time to get started.

Some pointers I’ve learned along the way to losing weight permanently:

  1. Don’t do the latest fad diet.  They don’t really work and even if you do lose the weight you haven’t changed anything about your eating patterns and it will come right back and usually with a few more pounds to boot.
  2. The people that lose weight the best and keep it off the longest attend a meeting of some sort.  We all need encouragement, accountability and support.  There are many groups such as Weight Watchers, Prism Weight Loss, and others that can help you go through the process.  It’s always easier to do something with others than all alone.  There are many good weight loss programs, but the successful ones use this principle in their plan.
  3. The weight loss programs that work the best and help you keep the weight off the longest will all require the same thing… that you measure your portions, keep track of what you are eating, excercise and change the types of food that you put in your body.  Sorry to have to be the one to break it to you 🙂 but there’s no magic pill.  Once you get over the fact that you need to do this, it really is very easy.  The benefit of having to weigh, measure and plan is that it becomes a part of your routine.  Americans especially have absolulely no idea what a proper serving of food is — it’s definitely NOT what the restaurant serves you!
  4. Simply changing the quality of the food that you are eating, such as changing out brown rice for white, 100% whole wheat for white bread, eating more fruits and vegetables and eliminating sugars can actually make it easy to take your weight off and keep it off permanently.  Good food satisfies your cravings, bad food kicks them into high gear.
  5. (UPDATE: I thought to add this one later)  Find someone who has succeeded and kept their weight off and ask them how they did it.  When I wasn’t serious yet about losing weight I formulated a lot of spontaneous plans on how I was going to lose weight — the problem was that none of them were based on any knowledge that had led to success.  I was guessing at things rather than finding out what worked and what didn’t work and why.  I was following pop culture, rumor and the latest easy fix program.  The problem with easy fixes are that they are neither easy or fix anything!

If you’re like me, the first brownie leads to the tenth.  The first cookie or piece of pie never satisfies it just makes me crave more and more and more.  If that’s the case for you too, it’s so much easier to avoid the first bite than to resist the second, third, fourth… well, you get the picture.

I lost 63 pounds in less than a year participating in the Prism Weight Loss Program.  Their web address is www.pwlp.com if your’e interested.  Miss Stacey, in response to her health crisis earlier this year has also worked through the same program and has lost to date over 50 pounds!!!  Way to go Stacey!!!!!!  But what I love feeling the most isn’t "skinny" it’s ‘healthy."  No more yucky, I ate too much and am miserable feelings.  No more guilt for being out of control.  No more having my mind consumed with thoughts of food all day long.  If I can do it, you can too!  Happy Holidays.

THE PROVERB OF THE DAY: Prov 4:10-12 Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many.  I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble. NIV

My 100,000th Visitor Contest…

Will only take guesses for two more days and then I’m going to cut off the entries and let you all know where the count stands for the final count down. You have until Thursday night at midnight, PDT to make your guess.

So, if you haven’t made a guess, make one by commenting on this post.  Give the day and the time (EST will be used as the standard for simplicity’s sake) and I will record your guess.  The person who guesses the closest to the actual date and time will win their choice of any kit in my entire DAISIE COMPANY catalog.  GOOD LUCK!!!!

Thanksgiving, Fall, Harvest Clip Art Craft Kits by Audrey Jeanne Roberts

(UPDATE: now available at Daisie for $4.98.  Just click picture to go to the store.)  I didn’t get a chance to show the third Fall/Harvest or Thanksgiving craft set that I created, so I thought I’d give you a sneak peek now.  I’m not certain which day this week that these are coming out at THE DAISIE COMPANY, but it will be Tuesday or Friday.

This kit comes with a favor box with a three dimensional top and two different designs of place mats.  If you have an oversized printer there are files that you can simply print out and use as is or laminate.  If you have a normal size printer, there are files that you print, cut and assemble together to make the placemats out of.

The favor boxes are 2 3/8" square when finished and will hold a small gift, candies, or other treats for your guests to enjoy.

This kit matches with the other 2 sets to create an entire decor for the fall or if you’re in the USA the Thanksgiving holiday.

(UPDATE: Thanksgiving Card/Table decoration now available at Daisie for $6.98.  Just click on picture to go to the store)

I have a couple of additional previews of the centerpiece card showing the envelope and a single section that can be used for a Thanksgiving card or invitation on its own and then will match the really fun and intriguing centerpiece star card.  It looks quite difficult but is very easy to assemble.

A lot of you have never tried any kind of crafting with your computers.  If you can digitally scrapbook, you can create an amazing array of crafts and home decor items.  In the next few months I’m hoping to begin to really explore creating some new home decor projects for Daisie Company… so stay tuned!!!

THE PROVERB OF THE DAY:Prov 1:20-22 Wisdom calls aloud in the street,
she raises her voice in the public squares; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech:  "How long will you simple ones love your simple ways?  How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?  NIV

Each time I read the Proverbs I realize how little mankind has really "evolved" or changed.  Men still need to seek out wisdom and more naturally are drawn to foolishness.  It’s still harder to become a person who lives by an internal desire to walk in integrity and righteousness than someone who simply gives in to every desire and natural drive.  But he or she who seeks wisdom as a way of life will still eat of its fruit and that fruit will still be sweet!

So Much I Want to Say…

but I’m in super-crunch-crisis-get-stuff-to-manufacturer’s mode!  I have some very exciting possibilities that I’m being presented for and have to give it my full attention for the next couple of days so be patient with me (and of course when and if it comes to fruition you’ll get in on the news!)

But today, my BABY turns 21.  I can close my eyes and feel the labor pains, smell the new baby smell and feel her snuggled up in my arms.  This is my dare-devil pilot daughter!  She’s an amazing woman and I am so blessed to be called "Mom" by her.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JACQUI!!!!!!  No mother was ever prouder of her children than this mom (maybe equally proud, but not prouder!).

My baby’s grown up just in time for us to welcome our new GRANDSON, Ellington.  He’ll be born at the end of January and the cycle will begin anew.  Here’s a poem that I wrote a few years back.  I wrote it when Jacqui was twelve.  It is copyrighted, so you may use it to make a single item for yourself but not for sale please.

THE CIRCLE OF LOVE

My child, when you were conceived I held you deep inside…in the circle of my womb.  We were so close, we shared everything, you and I.  On the day you were born I held you in the circle of my arms, joyously sharing you with those I loved the most.

Then when you seemed to fit just right, you began to walk and talk and grow and the circle of my arms had to open more and more.  Your gangly arms and legs began spreading outside of my reach… My circle could no longer contain all you were becoming!

Now I watch your life moving into even bigger circles, uniquely your own… A tiny part of me fears I will stand apart, alone… somewhere outside your heart… but the greater part of me knows you will carry with you the values, wisdom and truth shared within our circle of love.

And now I know, as I walk the path of all who have passed this way before, it’s in the letting go that the circle of love begins again.  Copyright Audrey Jeanne Roberts  (This is available as a framed, matted, hand-calligraphied piece from Audrey Jeanne’s Expressions 800-662-3333 if you’re interested)
