Windows on Christmas Digital Clip Art Kit Previews by Audrey Jeanne Roberts

Windows on Christmas Preview 1(UPDATE: Now available for $6.48 at Daisie.  Just click on the first picture to go to the store)  My newest kit, "Windows on Christmas" will be in the DAISIE COMPANY store next week.  I’ll show two of the previews today and 3 tomorrow.

My inspiration for this kit was being a little girl looking at the beautiful Christmas trees lit and in our neighbor’s windows or looking out a window watching the snow fall.  There’s something magical about how windows frame our view of the world and the holiday!

This kit has four images that can be used as the front of your Christmas cards as well as quite a few Christmas trees, a poinsettia wreath, presents and the windows you see come with images behind them and empty for your to use with your own image.

Windows on Christmas Preview 2Imagine a Christmas card with the window on the front cover with its panes cut out and the interior of the card peeking through!  I’m excited to see what you can make out of this kit and enter into my "Creating a Special Christmas Contest" at THE DAISIE COMPANY.  Rules and information on this contest can be found here:http://www.daisiecompany.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21136

I’ll have more previews tomorrow and then will be gone until Thursday night.  Remember, tomorrow is the first half of the month contest ending date, so all you have to do to enter is post your comments on the 1st to the 15th of the month.  The prize will be a set of my Peony Cottage Quilt gift bags, so good luck!

THE PROVERB OF THE DAY: Prov 14:7-9  Stay away from a foolish man,
for you will not find knowledge on his lips. The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception. Fools mock at making amends for sin, but goodwill is found among the upright.  NIV

Memory Trends Scrapbook Show Next Week by Audrey Jeanne Roberts

My scraponizerNext Sunday I leave for Las Vegas, NV to attend the "Memory Trends" show.  This show is specifically for Scrapbooking and related crafts.  I’m getting excited to see what’s new in the industry, make some new contacts and probably purchase a new wide-format laser printer if I find a good deal.

I will pick up information on new products and goodies and share it with you as a lot of the companies that are showing will be debuting new lines.  I should be able to blog from my hotel room at Harrah’s (I’m assuming they have wireless available as I didn’t book the room).  Unfortunately, my laptop isn’t set up to handle my digital camera so I won’t be able to post any pictures until I get home, but I’ll do my best to take you along with me!

I am assisting a friend who is teaching a class on organizing scrapping supplies with a new product that I received a sample of yesterday.  It’s called the "Scraponizer," (www.scraponizer.com)  The picture is of my decorated set (they don’t come quite so pretty!)  It’s a wonderful set of 4 see through plastic shallow storage compartments that store securely on a shelf and pull down for use.  One is divided in 2 secure compartments, one has 4, one has 6 and one has 8 compartments.  Each compartment won’t leak into the others because of the way it is constructed.

My clean desk!I decorated my boxes yesterday to bring to the show, it was fun to get to take a break from designing for others and play around with organizing my own supplies to go with my newly partially organized studio space!  Fun, fun, fun!

Working on my computer desk yesterday was a joy.  When I cleaned I took time to ask myself these questions and make changes accordingly:

  1. What isn’t working on this desk and why?
  2. What is being stored here that really shouldn’t be and where should I move it?
  3. How can I get more clear desk top space for working?

One of the most innovative things I did to create space was place my oversized printer on top of a formica paper storage unit (strong enough to hold the weight).  It is still very accesible, but now doesn’t make me feel crowded and closed in.  I had tended to use the paper print out tray as a storage space which probably isn’t very good for it and certainly isn’t very efficient!  Now I have paper storage for the various papers I use, as well as storage for art to be scanned.  To its left out of camera range, is a vertical file stacker for current projects to be stored in folders instead of layers on the desk.

Still to be done is the oversized paper mess on the second shelf of my bookcase unit.  I need to build a paper storage unit like the letter size so that the varieties of papers I use can be separated not just piled.  That however, is a project for another day!

Tomorrow I’ll have a preview of my newest Christmas kit that will be coming out next week  "Windows on Christmas"  Come back by for a peek!  Also, the Blog contest is ending on Saturday!  So post away on the comments.

THE SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY: Rom 12:17-19  Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. NIV

Okay… This is REALLY Embarassing!

Remember that "Messiest Studio Contest" I told you about a couple of weeks ago.  Well, just guess who won said contest!!!!  YIKES!  When I got the news I told my family and started uncontrollably blushing.  Then I grabbed an empty trash can and went to work.  That was about 7 PM and I stopped at about 1 AM.  I’m not finished but I made a really good start on things.

I’ve just been too busy to stop so it all piles up.  If I stop to clean I miss a deadline, so the mess gets worse and worse until I can barely function.  Does that sound familiar?  I’m sure that I’m not alone.  The part that amazed me last night is that the worst area cleaned up in less than half an hour.  So how much time did I waste looking for things when I couldn’t spend half an hour cleaning?

Here’s what I learned last night as I was throwing about 150 pounds of paper away (an entire, very large trash can on wheels).  Most of my issue is with paper — surprise, surprise!  A lot is the magazines and catalogs that I need to look through for ideas and to keep track of trends.  I’m not sure what the answer is on that one as I still need them but don’t have enough time to look through them on a regular basis.  I’ve been letting about half of my subscriptions go and picking my magazines more carefully.

The other part of the paper issue is things that I’ve printed out to check that the files are good, colors are okay or are copies of emails with instructions for projects that I’m working on.  I tend to keep piling things around my computer and work off of the top layer.  When I consistently take a few moments at the end of my day to get rid of what I’m done handling, I do better.  So since I totally cleaned and reorganized my computer desk that’s what I’m going to start doing again.  Historically I do well for quite a while.  So how do I keep the habit up for the long haul?  I don’t quite know the answer to that one yet!

The organizational expert counselled me to get rid of a lot of my tables.  I think she’s right.  They tend to be easy places to accumulate stuff that I just don’t want to make a decision about at the moment.  Then they get buried by the next layer of procrastinated decisions and my life is in chaos once again.  The old adage HIO comes to mind… Handle it ONCE!  Make a decision and throw it away, file it away or do what you need to to put it to rest.  But Handle it!

Oh well.  I won a great prize though, so since I aired my "dirty studio" out in public at least it was worth it.  i won a year’s listing on an new licensing website called "Simply licensed."  www.simplylicensed.com  It’s a place where mfgs. can come to see art and artists to see if there’s something that fits their need so it’s really a cool prize.   Thanks for the congratulations on the win from so many of you (along with your admission that you could easily have won if you entered  that helped a lot!)

THE PROVERB OF THE DAY  Proverbs 10:17 He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.  NIV

Cook Book Interiors by Brownlow and Audrey Jeanne Roberts

I wanted to show you samples of what the interiors of these cookbooks  look like and let you know that if you win one of the categories of the "Audrey Jeanne’s Creating a Special Christmas Contest" at THE DAISIE COMPANY, you will win your choice of one of the four cookbooks!

The interior has 98 pages all contained in clear plastic sleeves so that messy fingers won’t damage the recipe cards.

The 24 matching blank recipe cards are beatifully printed on extremely heavy card stock.

If you use these as gifts for Christmas or a new bride, you might want to include some of your special heirloom recipes written onto the blank cards to give the new bride or special friend a head start on building her collection!

The contest at Daisie Company will run through October 31st and covers 3 categories, crafting, scrapbooking and cardmaking.  There will be three winners in each category and for the beginning crafter, just entering your creations gives you an opportunity to win one of each week’s random drawing prizes!

The goal is to get all of us a jump start to crafting our Christmas gifts early so we’re not pulling our hair out the week before Christmas!!!!

Don’t be surprised if you post one of your creations and I lift your picture to post it here on my blog .  I want to show you off to all of my friends!

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY:  Rom 5:1-5  Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.  Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;  perseverance, character; and character, hope.  And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.   NIV

Brownlow Easel Recipe Books Now Available! by Audrey Jeanne Roberts

Chocolate Cook Book by Audrey JeanneI created a series of four Easel Cookbooks for Brownlow earlier this year and they’re finally available!  I created all of the art for the books and Lesha Henderson compiled the recipes.  Each picture is a link to the website, just click on the picture and it will take you to "Laura’s Cottage" where you can read more or purchase the cook books.

Each book has a vinyl coated, protected cover that opens up to become an easel so that they stand on the counter as you’re working with them.  Each recipe card is in a plastic sleeve so it is protected as well.  There are 24 recipe cards and 24 beautiful coordinated blank recipe cards.

Recipe Book Preview, DessertsIf you click on the pictures, they will take you to an online retailer that you can purchase from should you wish to.  You may also find these books at specialty gift shops around the country.

The recipes in these books are so incredibly scrumptious sounding… maybe I’ll have to break out the mixing bowls after my next deadline is complete?!

Southern Cooking Cook Book PreviewWhen I think of Southern cooking, my mouth begins to water!  I remember my first road trip through the south when I was 12 years old (and skinny enough to eat all the fried chicken I wanted!)  The Favorite Southern Recipes starts out with Cheese Grits Casserole, Breakfast Pie and OF COURSE SOUTHERN BISCUITS!!!  There’s nothing that says "Friendship and hospitality" like a great southern-inspired meal prepared by loving hands and a warm heart.

Quick and Easy Cookbook PreviewThe Favorite Quik and Easy Recipes might be the perfect gift for a new bride or a college student who will be living in their first apartment.  The art in it is a mix of a retro feel with contemporary swirls (it’s some of my favorite!!)

THE PROVERB OF THE DAY:  Prov 6:6-8  Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!  It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.

A Cup of Christmas Tea Inspired Clip Art by Audrey Jeanne Roberts

(UPDATE:  This kit is now avaiable at Daisie for $6.48.  Just click on this link to go to the store.  )I received my first tea pot and tea cups as a gift from my dear "Nanny."  She introduced me to the delights of tea and the sparkling beauty of her china tea cup collection.

When I was just 10 years old, she took us to the Princess Hotel in Victoria British Colombia.  I remember how the polished silver sparkled in the candle light. ladies were elegantly dressed and I carefully watched everything that my grandmother did to make sure I did it too.  It was so fun to hold my pinky finger, just so!

Christmas Clip Art Preview 2My newest clip art set "Victorian Rose Christmas 1"  has lots of tea inspired art, swagged borders, pine boughs and elegant coordinated papers.  There are delightful tea cup charms and an elegantly jeweled "ornament hanger" that can be used to "hang" a frame, charm or tea cup ornament on a scrapbook page, Christmas card or craft.

I hope that you’ll enjoy working with the Victorian wallpaper inspired background papers on your crafts or projects.  There are four of them included in this kit.

I can’t believe how close Christmas is getting!!!  I received some product samples from one of my favorite manufacturers today, Brownlow Gifts.  http://www.brownlowgift.com/catalog/product_detail.php/pid=1406~subid=59/index.html

Tomorrow I’ll tell you about the goodies I created with and for them. I’m so excited about how I plan to use these for Christmas gifts for those I love.  There’s something really special about a gift that has been made by hand inspired by the love we hold in our hearts.

I hope you’ll make many of your Christmas gifts this year and bless those you love in a very special way!

Making Adjustments… Keeping Flexible as we Age

I’m a pretty flexible sort of a girl… which comes with the territory of being an artist in a lot of ways.  Have you ever noticed that there are certain sets of traits that seem to come as a package deal?  My traits tend towards: artistic, flexible, easily think of new ideas, have a hard time following through on the old ideas, disorganized, free to experiment, and a disdain for routine.  Hmmm do you think they just might be a pretty common set of artist’s personality characteristics?!

Each of us has a series of traits that are a strength in one way and a weakness in another.  Any and every strength pushed too far becomes a weakness.  But be forewarned… when we grow inordinately proud of our strengths they are almost certain to become weaknesses.  One example would be the organized wife who can run her household efficiently can very easily become stiff, unyielding, emotionally distant and domineering.  The loving doting father who loves to play with his son or daughter, but is so playful he isn’t consistent disciplining them is another example of a strength that can become a weakness.

It is common for the culture and world around to tend to value one set of traits over another.  We appreciate the person who is always on time, who’s life’s schedule is in perfect order, and accomplishes all the tasks they set out to do in a day, but ofTen don’t realize how the relationships in their life are strained because of their perfectionistic bent.  They can easily become arrogant and proud because they measure up so well to the character traits that are easily measured, while missing the importance of the immeasurable traits of kindness, gentleness and self-control.

As a culture we dislike the indivdual who has the trait of running late, missing deadlines and forgetting appointments, but rarely honor the fact that they tend to be some of the kindest, most loving and approachable people who will set aside their agenda to meet your needs.  God made all of these personality traits and delights in the uniqueness He created in each of us, but He also wants us to develop in EVERY SINGLE AREA of our life, developing sound character and a disciplined life.

Each strength in our life needs to be in balance and to do that we need to work towards strengthening those areas of our personality that we find to be weak.  The easily organized, scheduled, list-driven achiever needs to work especially hard to be willing to lay aside her accomplishment of the day’s tasks to meet the immediate emotional needs of her family.   The spontaneous, fun-loving wife who hates to plan anything, needs to work harder to develop a family schedule that keeps a sense of balance and order or she will not help her children succeed in life.  If we want our relationships to grow deeper in love and harmony we don’t get to say, "That’s just who I am and you have to get used to it."

"Wild and crazy," "open to experimentation" and "banker" aren’t usually associated with each other are they?!  A banker or accountant will tend towards a rigidity and love of routine that makes what they need to do much easier for them to accomplish.  Yet while those characteristice can be fabulous in the CPA that does your books they might be quite difficult to live with if you’re their 13 year old daughter or their artist/creative/craft-loving wife!  Perhaps this individual needs to work at developing their playful side (they might never do it spontaneously but they CAN plan some play time!!!)

Once we figure out a little bit more of who we are, we need to be willing to adjust who we are to fit with those we share our lives.  What do you love the most about them?  What character trait is at the root of it?  What is the "flip-side" of that character trait and does it drive you nuts?!  If you think through your family and friend’s character traits enough to see the benefits of each personality AND remind yourself frequently of why you love them, it gets so much easier!  If you simply react to the fact that they are different from you without valuing those differences you’re probably headed for some very unhappy and strained interactions.

Some women I really enjoy were discussing their recently retired husbands.  They both love their husbands dearly and are happily married, yet the change was making them change their routines perhaps a little more than they were comfortable with.  They were both irritated, frustrated and hating the change.  Having a retired husband at home when they were still working meant that their "domain" was being taken over in their abscence!!!  The kitchen that each needs to be organized HER way, pretty much had no pattern by the time she arrived home.  You could tell they were really struggling with the adjustment because of the natural inflexibility that tends to come with age.

After listening to them for a while I gently broke in with this reply, "I was widowed at 36 years old and discovered the hard way that the very things that most drove me nuts, were some of the things I MISSED the most when my husband was gone.  A perfectly clean home that is empty is not a very joyful place."  I could tell that these wonderful women really heard what I had to say… sometimes we just don’t think beyond our immediate irritation or frustration to what it is about our mates or our children that we delight in so much.

When I value my characteristics more than yours, I can tend to become inflexible and hard to live with.   When I take the time to list what it is I love about you and then see how the flip-side of those character traits might be a little frustrating,  they become a little easier to make adjustments for.

"Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape!"  Relationships take flexibility and that flexibility has to be worked at a little harder as the years go by as we tend to become more inflexible naturally.  Perhaps this prayer would be helpful if you struggle in this area:

"Lord, I really do love my family, but I am finding myself getting irritated, frustrated and forgetting WHY I love them.  Please help me to see their good characteristics and perhaps even write them down to remind myself. when I need to  Show me what their strengths and weaknesses are and how to adjust my expectations accordingly.

Show me where I am proud, unyielding or inflexible because of my strengths and show me what I might be blind to as to my own weaknesses.  Fill my heart with grace for the weaknesses of others instead of a critical spirit.  Help me to grow where I am weak and learn to control strengths that tend to get out of balance.  I can’t do it without your help!  AMEN"

THE SCRIPTUREOF THE DAY:  2 Cor 12:7-10
To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.  Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.  But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

The Blog Contest Winner is….

the 4th commentor on the 20th day of the month (hehehehe, I’m making you go find out who you/she is!) aren’t I mean?!  Actually I’m doing that to show you exactly how the choice is made, we pick a number out of a bowl for the day of the month, then we check to see how many comments there are (we don’t even see who the names are that have made comments) and we pick a number out of the bowl again that’s within the # of comments made and we have a winner!!!

The next contest starts today through the 15th of the month and I’ll let you know what that prize will be sometime next week so stay tuned!  I won’t be writing any more today as I’m getting my coolest grubbies on and digging through our shop, garage, house and containers to find anything I can give away and get out of here.  Our church has a huge garage sale in September each year and the money goes to our building fund and the mess gets out of my house so we both win!  Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!
