An Amazing Experience… 2 Dozen hummingbirds 18 Inches Away!

Hummingbirds in massI haven’t taken any pictures of my hummingbirds for quite a while, I keep forgetting to have Jacqui record them on digital video so that I can post them online for you to see.  It is such an amazing experience.  There are so many hummingbirds here right now that I fill 4 of these containers twice a day.

Tonight as I was feeding them, I decided to stand on a chair about 18 inches away and just watch for a while.  The first thing I noticed was that we’ve been invaded by a huge amount of Rufous Hummingbirds.  They are the rusty colored hummers.  Most years we’ve had two or 3, this year the populations seems to be about 60% of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and 40% Rufous.

When you stand as close as I did, they will literally fly inches from your face and you can feel the volume of air that their little wings move.  It feels like standing in front of a fan at medium speed.

Close up Rufous HummingbirdsThe second set of pictures are some close up photos of the Rufous birds.

I was amazed at the quality of the photographs that I was able to take.  This is just a moderately priced Fujifilm finepix with no special lens or strobe.  You can bet that these birds will show up in the future in some paintings!  I’m going to take a lot more reference photos while they’re still here.  Being able to capture them in various flying positions is very valuable for me.

Anyone who has watched hummingbirds knows that they fight a lot, but until I stood as close as this, I never realized that they do actually hit one another. You can hear beaks click as the hit each other and several times I heard body blows that were quite extreme.  These are seriously territorial birds!

It’s impossible to actually count how many there are, but there are three feeders under this patio cover and each one was covered with 18-24 birds either feeding or within 6-10 feet in a holding pattern. Some times two birds will actually share a single feeding spot and take turns.  It make me wonder if their families work together to feed with a strong male guarding.  I observed that kind of behavior several times.  I’m going to have to find some more detailed books than I’ve read thus far.   Wish you could be here!

Waiting for the First Crisp, Cool Day of Fall? Here’s a preview! by Audrey Jeanne Roberts

I adore the fall.  Every year I feel like I "come alive again" after a long hot summer when the first crisp, cool day of fall arrives.  So I’ve been working on some new kits in excited anticipation of those wonderful days.

Fall Digital Clip Art Preview"Golden Harvest" will have an assortment of papers, tags, frames and art that will combine quickly and easily to create anything you want to design to celebrate the fall all the way through Thanksgiving.

It looks like there will end up being at least two kits and a paper pack at this point.  We’ll see what more appears as I keep working on it.

I think that I’ll also create a special "For These Things We Give Thanks" book out of this art.  Each fall, we put ours on display and read through the entries from the last decade or so of our family life.  It is such a joy to read the entries of our vistors and friends that shared Thanksgivings with us in the past and some who will celebrate once again with us when we gather together in heaven one day.

Thankfulness isn’t something that we should think about and express one day a year… it is a way of life that we should practice every day.  What are you thankful for?  Who has been a blessing to you?  What has the Lord done for you and what changes has he produced in your heart for which you are grateful?  Take a moment today to think on these things and give thanks for the amazing blessings you have in your life!  If there’s someone special who you are thankful for, give him or her a hug (or a call or send a note) and tell them just how much they mean to you!

THE SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY:  2 Cor 9:10-11
Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

Where Does Your Significance Come From? by Audrey Jeanne Roberts

This week in my short conversations with my husband, Steve (only 5 minutes a day when he’s in fire camp), one subject kept coming up.  He’s working with a lot of ex-firefighters, battalion chiefs etc. who have retired from the fire service and are now working part time with vendors that support the fire services.  Many of these men used to hold positions of authority and really miss the action and the honor they had in their former professons.   So they spend a lot of time remembering the good old days and telling each other what they did, with whom and when.  He said it can be really funny to sit at dinner and hear 3 or 4 men trying to impress one another with their stories yet nobody’s really listening to what the other man is saying, they are trying to get respect and be noticed by men that are trying to get respect and be noticed by them.  It’s kind of funny, a little silly… and it’s a lot sad.

Why do I bring this up?  Of course, because there’s a lesson in it for all of us.  These men, when reduced to the core of who they are, are probably very insecure.  They found their value through their jobs and now the job doesn’t exist for them any more, so who are they and what makes them special?   The important and valuable work they did once defined who they were and now that they no longer do it, many of them are somewhat lost and left purposeless.

Men tend to naturally draw their value from their work, women tend to draw their sense of value from their relationships.  Is what you do what defines who you are?   Is it your relationship with your husband or your children that gives you value?  If your value is based on something that is as changeable as a job or a relationship, your life can be unpended in a moment.  If your value is based on something deeper and more lasting, you can weather any storm.

As an artist, I’ve been blessed that a few people have seemed to really enjoy my work.  I deeply delight in that, but fortunately it no longer defines who I am and creates my sense of value.  I will confess that when I began my career, it did.  I was very insecure and looking for acceptance, approval, appreciation and even the delightful "pats on the back" that being an artist can bring.  If I still depended upon that though, what would happen to me if I lost my eyesight, or got Parkinson’s like my Grandma Flint did and my hand shook too much to paint?  What if the market changed so much that no one liked my style of art anymore?  Would I still have anything of value to share with others?  Would I still feel secure in who I am and would my sense of purpose for my life change?  It’s important for all of us to ask these kinds of questions because change can happen to any of us in an instant…

So my question for you to ponder is this… where do you derive your value?  Is it from something you do well?  Is it from your cooking skills?   Is it from your figure or your beauty?  Is it from your crafting and the gifts you give to others hoping they’ll notice the time, energy and skill that went into it?  Is it from your wealth?  (okay… I heard the laughter at that one!)  If it is, any and all of these things can be lost very quickly, there is no guarantee that they will last throughout your lifetime.

A sense of value that is permanent, solid and unshakable is one that is founded upon who you are becoming as a person, the character and wisdom that is being built into you.  I understand that many of my readers are not religious or Christian and their sense of value will be derived in many different ways, but I am going to simply share from where I have come to derive my sense of purpose and value.  For me, much of it is in becoming as much like Jesus as possible.  The word "Christian" actually means "little Christ’s" not that I am aiming to become him, but that I want to become his student and be an imitator of what I see him do.  When I become like him, my sense of value and purpose remains constant and won’t change with my life circumstances.  I can be like Christ if I am confined to a wheelchair or become the President of a Corporation.  I can be like him working in a Mc Donald’s or if I am an Academy-Award-winning actress.  The emphasis becomes on who I am as I am doing a job or having a relationship or doing good works, not on the job or relationship or good works themselves.

My value comes from how highly God values me.  He loved me enough to die in my place.  He loved me enough to create this beaufiful world for me to inhabit!  Have you ever stopped to think about this… the God that created the universe in all it’s infinite size, beauty and complexity… with nothing but the power of His spoken words also created you and knows exactly how many hairs there are on your head both before and after you brush you hair!  He attended to the tiniest details of creation, and before the world was created, he planned out every single one of your days AND designed good works for you to fulfill.  Does that boggle your mind like it does mine?  This same God loves you and adopted you as His child, has given you a place by His side at His throne and declared that He will never leave you or forsake you!

When we come to fully realize the awesomeness of this love and the security of His care for us, it can produce a deep security in our hearts that helps us to realize that nothing in life can shake it.  The man or woman who lives with this sense of security at their core can look at the world and realize "It’s not all about me, it’s all about how the God who loves me can use me to touch a hurting world."

A career can come to an end.  A marriage can fail or you can lose your spouse.  Fortunes can change on the whims of the stock market or the real estate market, but a person who’s life value is found in the Lord will never ever lose his or her significance.

THE SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY:  Eph 2:4-10  But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions-it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.  NIV

Some More New Audrey Jeanne’s Expressions Framed Sentiments by Audrey Jeanne Roberts

Hi everyone!  I’ve had my "head down" designing intensively our new line of framed prints for the Fall.  It’s a lot of work, especially when it involves writing which is actually the hardest part of it all.  Other times its working and working at getting a layout right with the balance of the text, the art and the overall look.

Audrey Jeanne's Expressions Framed Prints Sentiments PreviewI thought I would share two of my newest framed print selections.  A larger is a second design for 1 Corinthians 13 and a new Friendship piece that has a French Antique floral feel.  Refreshing the line is a long process as we will usually update and redesign as many as 50 pieces at a time.  Once all of the new designs are completed, then I go to work on the catalog.  This year my daughter Jennifer is going to help out with the grapics.  I’ve been teaching her photoshop all year long and she gets the hang of it quite quickly (Thank you, Lord!!!!)

I will be making the old catalog available on this site as soon as I can by doing it as  a downloadable catalog.  Ideally, I  need to figure out how to make a pdf file (so Cheryl my dear wonderful adorable friend … hehehehe! if you know how to do that can you clue me in?!)  Once I can do that I’ll post a permanent page that will have the download for the catalog.  This is the stop gap measure until the web site gets built.

Our Summer Special applies to any purchases made from now through the end of September.  We’ll deluxe gift wrap and send a card with your personal message and personalize any print for no charge (normally a $10.00 cost), so if you have any special occasions like weddings, anniversaries, new babies or other family events, give us a call at (800)662-3333 and we’ll be happy to help out.  Also, we have a routine special where if you order 3 pieces we ship the order at our expense.

I haven’t heard from my sweetheart today… still hoping for a call tonight!  His partner’s wife called me today to say that he had called her last night and things were settling down.  Hopefully they didn’t have to move the fire camp.  It’s a lot of extra work if they did.

I thought I would change up today and do the scripture of the day and I chose "The Love Chapter" since that’s what I was designing all day!  It’s such a good reminder to me of how I am supposed to act.  I personalize it and put my name in the blanks like this… "Audrey is patient… Audrey is kind, she does not envy, she does not boast…"  YIKES!  It’s totally convicting!  Especially when I’m in a snipey mood or am being easily frustrated or angered.  I try to work on living this a little more each day.

THE SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY:  1 Cor 13:4-8, 13

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. … And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.  NIV

close up previews of papersThe final preview shows you close ups of the details of some of the papers.  These are incredibly dimensional looking and very fun to work with.  I hope you’ll enjoy them!

I finally received a call from my husband last night.  He is in the wilds of Idaho near Boise.  There are three fires in his area and the camp is so remote that there isn’t cell service available so I got 5 minutes to talk to him on a land line.  There were 25 guys lined up behind him so we kept it brief as there were 25 families just like ours waiting to hear each loved one’s voice!  Pray for their safety as their camp was on an alert for possible evacuation.  My husband isn’t a fire fighter, just a support staff worker, we are so proud of the fire fighters that lay their lives down every day of one of these wildfires to protect innocent lives and valuable property.  Having lived throught the Southern California fires in 2003 (which came 1200 feet from our home in the middle of the night) I can’t even think about what each of those men and women did for us without crying.  Hugs, love  and prayers to each of them!

THE PROVERB OF THE DAY: Prov 2:6-8  For the LORD grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He grants a treasure of good sense to the godly. He is their shield, protecting those who walk with integrity. He guards the paths of justice and protects those who are faithful to him.  NLT

"I’d Marry You All Over Again" is a brand new verse that I have written.  The text reads:  "When we began our life together, our love was shiny and new.  It was as yet untested… yet so full of promise.  Since then we’ve travelled hand-in-hand, on a path that has taken us places we could never have dreamed of.

Our love has come through the tests and trials of life, and has acquired the rich patina of a valued treasure.  Our passion remains, becoming enriched by the joy of a deepening and cherished companionship.  I love you more today than ever.  Without hesitation, I’d marry you all over again!"  Thank you for respecting that this text is copyrighted and may not be reproduced.

Here’s a link to Stacey’s blog for an update on her sister’s stroke.  http://www.thisjustinblog.com/  Since this post, the doctors believe that her sister may have a rare form of MS and further tests are being conducted.  If you visit her blog a note of encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

THE PROVERB OF THE DAY: Prov 1:5-7  Let those who are wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. And let those who understand receive guidance by exploring the depth of meaning in these proverbs, parables, wise sayings, and riddles. Fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. Only fools despise wisdom and discipline. NLT
